The Future of Fitness Tracking: Beyond Cameras, Lies Wearables πŸ“ˆ

The ability to track movement is crucial for any serious fitness program. It allows us to monitor progress, identify weaknesses, and ultimately achieve our health and fitness goals. However, current tracking methods often have limitations. πŸ‹οΈ‍♂️

Cameras, for example, can be powerful tools for tracking movement in controlled environments. Back in 2008, I even built a 3D camera tracking boxing prototype! But there's a catch: cameras become practically useless when you step outside their field of view.

Think about outdoor training runs or group fitness classes – a camera simply can't track your every move. πŸŽ₯

This is where wearables come in. In 2018, I had the opportunity to work with the most advanced wearable I'd ever seen, building a system that integrated it seamlessly with a gym's membership system. The experience solidified my belief that wearables hold immense potential for the future of the fitness industry. ⌚

Why? Unlike cameras, wearables can track your movement anywhere, anytime. Plus, they can collect a wealth of data beyond just movement, like heart rate, sleep patterns, and even stress levels. This allows for a much more holistic understanding of your health and fitness journey. 🌐

The Rise of Sensor Fusion πŸš€

The future of movement tracking isn't limited to just wearables. A concept called "sensor fusion" is emerging, where data from multiple sensors (like heart rate monitors and accelerometers) is combined to create an even more comprehensive picture of your activity. Imagine the possibilities – tracking not just your steps but also your form and exertion levels for a truly personalized workout experience. πŸ€–

The Adoption Question πŸ•’

The question remains: when will this future become reality? Will the fitness industry embrace this shift before major direct-to-consumer brands take the lead?

My Call to Action πŸ“£

Personally, I believe the future lies in combining heart rate and movement data. This marriage opens doors to incredible possibilities, allowing us to personalize workouts, optimize training plans, and achieve results faster. If you're involved in the health and fitness industry, this is something you should already be exploring. πŸ’ͺ
