Gymtimidation Is At An All Time High, Reported As High As 68%

adidas bumble fitness consumer fitness trends gymtimidation Jan 10, 2024

Gymtimidation is back in the news with Adidas report that a survey of women between 18-25 are avoiding the gym because of being intimidating.  In previous work I have seen this rate as high as 68% to the general population and its because people lack confidence.  Bumble is doing something about it with the Gym Buddy badge in their platform.

Get Your "Gym Buddy" Badge...🤷‍♂️🛡

This time Adidas commissioned a survey to 4,868 women (18-25yrs old) and 33% AVOID THE GYM because of intimidation. In previous posts I've gone deeper on this as others have reported up to 68% (Link In Comments) because they lack confidence.

WHAT'S Bumble GOT TO DO WITH IT.. 📱
Users on the app can add an "Gym Buddy" interest badge in hopes of people coming together to workout together in both their dating and friend mode.

👉 Bumble has reported as high as 100 million users and 58 million active users with 12.3 million monthly active users (MAU). That is pretty good reach for pushing "fitness together"

Here Are The Driving Factors of Gymtimidation

🔸Fear of being judged - 20%
🔸How to use equipment - 33%
🔸Uncertain how to hit the next level - 25%
🔸No one to workout with - 33%

➡ 70% said a gym partner will help overcome discomfort and intimidation! There is also data that shows people stick to their new years resolution longer with a partner... So if people need people to succeed...

GYM QUESTION❓ ➡ How Are You Addressing This?

I said this in another post but you need to have a solution for confidence. At the beginning of the gym journey it is super important and I think as an industry we need to tackle this gymtimidation.

📌 Side note; this morning I forgot my headphones so I took the time to look around the gym and I counted 54 people. Over the course of the hour I estimated 20% of them had "Gym Buddies" and something that stood out was gym buddies were less likely to have headphones on as the rest of the 80% almost all had headphones on. That left me with the question - Is my gym buddy my headphones? - (music and podcasts for me)
